FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Vision Burbank Urges Residents to Attend May 20 Special City Council Meeting; Calls for Mixed-Flow BRT Instead of Dedicated Bus Lanes
BURBANK, CA — Community organization Vision Burbank is urging residents, business owners, and neighborhood stakeholders to attend the upcoming Special Meeting of the Burbank City Council on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Burbank City Hall. The meeting will address critical updates regarding the LA Metro North Hollywood-to-Pasadena Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project and the impacts of Senate Bill 79 (SB79).
The meeting comes as the city enters a pivotal phase of transit planning. While Vision Burbank supports the expansion of regional transit, the organization is advocating for the City Council to uphold its previous commitment regarding roadway configuration. Specifically, Vision Burbank supports the BRT operating through Burbank under a “Mixed-Flow” model — where buses share existing lanes with vehicle traffic — until Metro can demonstrate a daily ridership of 17,000 passengers, the benchmark previously agreed upon by the City Council.
“We are not anti-transit; we are pro-Burbank,” said representatives from Vision Burbank. “The City Council agreed that dedicated lanes should only be considered if and when ridership reaches 17,000. We expect the City to honor that threshold. Until those numbers are proven, we support Mixed Flow to protect our small businesses and prevent the gridlock that would result from removing two active travel lanes on Olive Avenue.”
The current Metro proposal seeks to install dedicated bus-only lanes along portions of Olive Avenue. Vision Burbank warns that converting these lanes prematurely could impact traffic flow, parking access, and local businesses while also triggering the high-density housing provisions tied to SB79. Under state law, dedicated transit corridors may allow increased residential density and reduced parking requirements near qualifying transit routes.
“Residents deserve a meaningful voice in decisions that could permanently reshape our neighborhoods,” the organization added. “Maintaining Mixed Flow until the 17,000 ridership goal is met is the responsible way to balance transit improvements with the protection of Burbank’s neighborhoods, businesses, and local control.”
